Courtney Blackwell grew up in Washington state and comes from a musically gifted family.
At the age of three she began taking lessons in classical cello by Dr. Wharton, a cello/bass professor at the University of Idaho. She would say her mother was most influential in her progressing in technique, tone, and ear training by practicing with her an hour every day.
During the past 3 years, since moving to the south, Courtney has really focused on changing the way the cello is used in ensembles. Now she prefers folk, blues, and bluegrass styles and has truly refined her style of playing.
