The Cotton District Arts Festival is proud to bring you the Juried Arts Competition and Exhibition. A focal point of the festival, the Juried Art exhibition is a carefully selected collection of work from both local and regional artists. Each piece shown in this exhibit is hand selected by a notable guest artist, and from these recognized pieces top awards are given in several categories. In addition, numerous merit prizes, provided by local individuals and businesses, are given to those artists selected by the juror as an honorable mention. We are very proud of both the quality of the work and the number of pieces sold and enjoyed by those in attendance each year. The depth and breadth of the art, and the creative and invigorating atmosphere found at the Juried Arts Exhibition each year is phenomenal, you won’t want to miss it.
To be selected as an exhibiting artist for the Juried Art show is an honor in itself. Works selected are viewed by thousands of festival goers providing the artist with recognition and publicity. The competition is open to artists eighteen years old and older, and whether you have been creating art for years, or are just getting started, we encourage you to enter the competition.
2014 Juried Arts Exhibitors
David Lambert, Artist
Artist David Lambert has been creating and showing art for several decades in and around Mississippi, and has developed a unique artistic style that has been referred to as surrealism, pop art, and expressionism. His bold brush strokes, bright color, and skill in conveying a story and evoking emotion result in art that is powerful in its ability to pull the viewer in. With just a glimpse of a story, or an unanswered question, his paintings leave you wanting to know more. They are both provocative and intriguing.
David's work has been shown in dozens of fine art museums and exhibitions in the United States, as well as throughout the world. He is particularly well known in the Southeastern United States were he has garnered numerous awards and recognition from art competitions and shows. His work can be found in permanent art collections throught the South, including the Ohr-O'Keefe Museum of Art in Biloxi, MS, the Mississippi Museum of Art in Jackson, MS, and Ogden Museum of Southern Art in New Orleans, LA, to name just a few.
David Lambert was Vice President of Bryant Galleries, (Jackson, MS and New Orleans, LA) for over twenty years, from 1989 to 2010. He is currently serving as the Gallery Director of the popular Michalopoulos Gallery in New Orleans, LA.
"My images are born from an intuitive method of creating a narrative. The stories recorded in paintings come from stream of consciousness or my overhearing a snippet of a conversation from another table while having a drink. One small piece of dialogue heard out of context or the visual flash of seeing something familiar in a new and irreconcilable context give life to my paintings, sculpture and drawings.
If there is an overarching thread running through the works it is a sense of anticipation - what next? I make no conclusions or judgments. When I put my brush down I become as much a viewer as the public. My intent is to create moments of everyday mystery - too often overlooked but essential to making life interesting.
The stories of these relationships are, at times, poignant and humorous."

This is a pledge by an individual or business to purchase a piece of art from the exhibit at a private reception prior to the exhibit being opened to the public. The artist is paid the asking price on the piece and the check is made payable directly to them.
This is a monetary award given either by an individual, in honor of someone, or in memory of someone. When the “First”, “Second”, and “Best in Show” prizes are awarded, the juror will choose artwork that is worthy of honorable mention and award each of them a Merit Award. The artist retains their artwork and receives the amount of the award as a prize. The recipient and the donor will find out on Saturday, at the awards ceremony, who was the recipient of their Merit Award.
