I create handmade ceramic pieces using stoneware and porcelain clays. No molds or slip casts are used in my process. All works are wheel thrown or hand built, the majority of which are functional. Some pieces are fired in an atmospheric reduction high fire kiln, while others are fired in mid-range oxidation with an electric kiln. I’m interested in the small details, creating my own patterns and textures with found tools, stones, natural materials, and other items. Most often I do this through stamping or carving the leather hard clay after the form has been made. Slip trailing, underglazes, and inlay techniques can also be found in my work. I enjoy making work that is comfortable for the user but also interesting to hold and feel in the hand, encouraging them to explore the entire piece.

My ceramics line is called A. Shelby Pottery, and I committed to making one-of-a-kind pieces completely handmade by me. I like to incorporate both wheel-thrown and hand-built techniques. As you will see in the attached photos, I mainly use a monochromatic color scheme with pops of gold accent. I believe this offers a modern take on ceramics.
